The Lar and Lorra Show

A History Lesson From Lar of Galen...

In 1867, the Kingdom of Hungary was joined with the Kingdom of Austria,
and Austria's Habsburg king Frederich Ferdinand von Beust became Emperor. In 1908, Austria-Hungary officially annexed the former Ottoman province of Bosnia-Herzogovenia,. This was purposefully conducted to coincide with Bulgaria's declaration of independence from the Ottoman Empire.  The move caused a great deal of angst among the great powers of Europe, especially Russia.  Russia was not only anxious to take advantage of the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire to expand it's own self, but saw itself as the champion of all Slavs.
The disintegration of the Ottomans' power and the shifting developments also loosened the reigns on old ethnic conflicts in the Balkan states, especially between Croatia and Serbia (Anyone remember the 1990s?).  On June 28, 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir-apparent of A-H) and his wife were assassinated by Serbian nationalists in Sarajevo. The tragic irony is that Franz was very much unlike his father, and was sensitive to the plight of the Slavic minorities.
Austria blamed Serbia's government, and made overtures for support from Germany if they made a move.  Russia came to Serbia's aid by declaring war on A-H, prompting Germany to declare war on Russia in support of A-H.  France and England honored their treaties and declared war in support of Russia.  Apparently not wanting to miss out on the fun and glory, Italy joined the Allies and Turkey
(primary remnant of the Ottoman Empire) joined the Central Powers.  America was eventually dragged in on the Allies' side, as the unprecedented carnage of   The Great War proceeded. The end result was that Hungary became an independent kingdom again, Austria became a republic, Germany became a weak, hamstrung republic, and Russia fell into civil war -- culminating with the rise of the Communists.
But the question I've had for years is: Why did Germany have to accept official blame for the war, and pay restitution to France (destroying the economy of both countries and leading to the Great Depression)? I think I have found the answer in Carlos D'Este's book "WARLORD".
In 1871, the various Teutonic kingdoms and principalities united as one entity, and Prussia's Hohenzoller king Wilhelm Friedrich Ludwig became Kaiser (Caesar) Wilhelm I of the German Empire.  When his son Wilhelm II (eldest grandchild of England's Queen Elizabeth) ascended the throne in 1888, he set out to expand Germany's military so as to challenge France for dominance in Europe.
Being a former soldier and enamored of all things military, Winston Churchill managed an invitation to view Germany's military exercises in 1909.  Churchill was alarmed not only by the size of their army, but their reforms in tactics to take advantage of modern weaponry.

At about the same time, Churchill was introduced to the tactics and operations of the Royal Navy.  Churchill was at once enraptured and dismayed.  He loved the pomp and traditions of the Navy, but stunned by the absolute refusal to modernize weapons and techniques.  The British Navy was still riding on the reputation gained by their victory over the combined French and Spanish fleets at Trafalgar  in 1805.  Meanwhile, Germany realized that to truly compete they must colonize, and that meant a navy capable of carrying their military power out of waters around Germany.  Thus, a naval arms race began.  Churchill pursued and gained the position of First Lord of the Admiralty, and began to force preparations to meet the new threat.

From Lorra of Pantherville...

Major Tom

A young Arab boy asks his father “What is that strange head piece you are wearing?"
The father said: "Why, my son, it is a 'chechia,.' In the desert it protects our heads from the intense heat of the sun."
"And what is this clothing you are wearing?” asked the boy. “This long flowing robe seems so…”
“Oh, my son!” exclaimed the father “It is very simple. This is a 'djbellah.' As I have told you, in the desert it is not only very hot, but the sand is always blowing. My djbellah protects the entire body,”
The son then asked: "But Father, what about those ugly shoes you have on your feet?"
"These are 'babouches' my son,” the father replied. You must understand that although the desert sands are very beautiful, they are also extremely hot. These babouches' keep us from burning our feet."
"So tell me then," added the boy.
"Yes, my son…"
"Why are you living in Dearborn Michigan and still wearing all this stuff?

From Lorra of Pantherville...regarding Otto Warmbier:

Libs say: "you can’t go to another country and try to steal from them. Respect their laws.”
.
Sure you can, millions of illegal immigrants do it every year here in the U.S.
.
I have yet to see any of them rendered comatose by the American legal system.

Lar of Galen...I was only half-listening when we had Fox on while eating dinner tonigh.  There was another debate about the Trump-Russia "controversy" ("Controversy" and "controversial" mean liberals are unhappy about something) going on, when the token Liberal said "... and Trump did encourage the Russians to hack Democrat emails." I almost choked on my salad.
This goes to prove that liberals have no sense of humor.  It was a joke!  Trump was obviously taking a jab at Hillary when he said that at the debate.  The Russians had hacked the DNC (according to them, that is.  They have never released the hacked files to the FBI, choosing instead to go with a company run by a Ukrainian who hates Russia and says they did it), and thousands of Hillary's emails that she was supposed to have turned over from her illegal private server had "disappeared". Pretty sharp.  But not serious.
But Kathy Griffin takes an ISIS pose with a bloody Trump head or Johnny Depp says its been too long since an actor assassinated a President (or Conan has a picture of Bush with crosshairs superimposed, or George Lopez call Bush a "puta", or Colbert says Trump's mouth is Putin's c*ck holster), ... oh, that is just hilarious!!

Liberalism is a mental disorder.

Lar of Galen on Trump NOT celebrating ramadan: Waitwaitwait!!!  You mean that for two decades we've had Presidents hosting dinner parties celebrating religious events??!!??  What about the separation of church and state (which is not in the Constitution)??!!!??  And why should the President -- or any other political leader -- "have" to celebrate a religion in which they do not participate? Have they been having Yom Kippur or Quanza dinners, too? This isn't hostility towards other beliefs, but if it isn't yours, WTF (Which all you "Battlestar" fans know means "What The Frak")??!!??

Lar of Galen...In 2015, all but 1 Republican representative voted to repeal BOCare.  They knew he would veto the measure, but that it would also help get them elected.  Now that the Republicans have both legislative houses and the white house, they are afraid to do what they promised because they somehow will keep them from getting reelected.
