Lar of Galen...As you have probably heard, an autonomous Uber car hit and killed a woman in Arizona. Well, Rush Limbaugh had some very astute observations today about reactions to the incident.
According to Rush, police said that the woman was standing on the median, and dashed out of the shadows in front of the car at a location where there was not a crosswalk. There was a human in the passenger seat acting as a monitor/data collector, but police said that even if they had been at the wheel with the car in normal mode, there would not have been time to react. The company said it was pausing its self-driving car operations in Phoenix, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and Toronto.
Here is where Rush's input gets interesting.
"As you know", stated Rush, "I read all these tech sites, and they are populated by young millennial leftists." According to him, they are all urging that we not make a rush to judgment. They say we should proceed cautiously, and not overreact. It would be imprudent to squelch this wonderful new technology because of one incident. After all, there are over 50,000 people a year killed by automobiles. You can't impede progress over a single mishap.
"But think", said Rush. "What if this woman had been killed with a gun". Regardless of the circumstances or type of gun, they would be howling for a total ban. And in this case, the mechanical device really was the killer, although by accident.
