Any spending by conservatives must be “paid” for through ever increasing taxation, most especially if it is constitutionally mandated.

Liberals are allowed 500 different media outlets to promote their destructive agenda. They are allowed to do things that as much as constitute throwing presidential elections with impunity.

True patriotism includes thrashing the military because, as we well know, the US military projects America’s evil intent (See Lesson 10).

It is incumbent that all liberals speak and act as if they are foreign policy experts who have America’s best interests at heart.
If a conservative points out that current events or historical facts make a mockery of the previous statement it is to be ignored of defined as “hate speech”.
Liberalism 101 Lesson 28:
Liberal organizations are all charged with advancing our progressive agenda but the masses are notorious for failing to understand that we labor only for their own good.
Therefore we must wrap the names of these organizations in sheep’s clothing with things like the American flag (a representation of the evil, hatred, and racism of America which we will use to our advantage until such time we can dispense with it). We will use names like “People for the American Way” and “American Civil Liberties Union”, issue vague and flowery literature and keep peasantry lulled into complacency so as to diminish opposition.
Liberalism 101 Lesson 29:
Even while advocating and implementing Marxist/Leninist policy we must deny we are doing so. Deception is key to implementation since the little people are incapable of grasping what is in their best interests. (See lesson #17)

To establish control over the peasant class liberals must ensure that they are the ones to define what will be controlled.
To allow toothless rubes to make their own decisions as to what they can eat, drink, buy, smoke, drive or whatever is dangerous and MUST be stopped at all costs. (See lesson 19)

Liberals are committed to creating as many voters as possible in order to maintain power.
In that endeavor we use many different means such as registering the dead on voter rolls. To that end we must ensure that our open borders policy is kept safe from racist xenophobic conservatives so that as many undocumented voters are allowed in as possible.
If conservatives point out the carnage caused by necessary policy remember to counter with the fact that they are racist and xenophobic. (See lessons 19 and 29)
Liberalism 101 Lesson 33:
Hypocrisy is a special word that defines the moral inconsistencies that liberals see in others.
Since there are no moral inconsistencies in liberal thought or applied philosophy, this word has no application in the description of liberals.

Facts and Talking Points for the Wisconsin Budget Showdown

Government employee union reform proposals in Gov. Walker’s budget repair bill:

Limits collective bargaining for most government sector employees to wages only, with wages capped to inflation;
Union members given the opportunity to vote every year to keep their union;
State can no longer collect union dues;
Requires union members to contribute 5.8% of their salary toward their pensions and 12.6% to the cost of their health insurance premiums.
- The comparable nationwide employee healthcare contribution is 20% according to the BLS.
- The comparable employee contribution for retirement was 7.5% in 2009, according to the Employee Benefits Research Institute

The bottom line:

This is about balancing the budget;
Compared to the national average, it is a modest proposal to ask government workers to contribute to their healthcare and pension;
The Governor’s full proposal will save $300 million and prevent approximately 5,500 layoffs of state workers and a similar amount of local government employees and teachers. As a result the Governor’s budget will not include furloughs or layoffs;
Workers will save money because union dues will not be required or collected by the government;
This bill has had over 17 hours of public hearings and vigorously debated. It is time for a vote;

Public sector vs. private sector fact sheet:

The average employer contribution for private sector retirement plans is 5.3% of payroll. The employer portion of the contribution for the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS) ranges between 10.55% and 13.3% of payroll (WPRI report: The Imbalance Between Public and Private Pensions in Wisconsin).
The Milwaukee Public School system spends up to $26,846 per year to provide family health insurance coverage for teachers. The nationwide average for family health insurance coverage for all public and private employers is only $13,770 (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Sept 12, 2010 article entitled: Public workers' generous benefits come at a price).
Nationwide, all public and private employees pay an average of 29% of their annual health care premiums. Milwaukee Public School teachers pay only 8% on average. (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Sept 12, 2010 article entitled: Public workers' generous benefits come at a price).

A Short Comment on Public Unions

With the protests in Wisconsin, I’m again reminded of the inherent logical problems with public-employee unions. Labor unions were originally created to protect the worker from the evil capitalist employer. But in the case of public unions, there is no evil capitalist employer. In fact, the employer is the government. And government employees are usually the first to defend the government as a public servant of the common good. Well, if the government is such a caring and nice entity, why is a union necessary?

This all seems very problematic, but let’s take this further. If the public employees need unions to protect themselves from the “cruel” government employer, then what protection does the rest of society need? If the government won’t treat its own employees well, how can we rely on the EPA, OSHA and the SEC to do anything for the public good? So in a way, this becomes a circular argument that indicts the public employees themselves.

Escaping the Great Depression - and Extending the Greater Depression

Here at Casey Research, our view of the Great Depression of the 1930s is a little different from that of most people. In our eyes, Franklin Roosevelt wasn’t a hero, he was a villain. Nearly everything he did served to extend and deepen the economic downturn.

With the exception of supporting the 21st Amendment for the repeal of Prohibition, Roosevelt’s involvement in the economy was an unmitigated disaster. But in popular memory, that failure is obscured by U.S. success in WW2, over which Roosevelt presided.
Today, unfortunately, Obama and his minions are taking Roosevelt as a model and are straining to repeat his mistakes. Because the distortions in today’s economy are far greater than those in the 1920s and 1930s, and since the public now relies upon government far more than it did in those days, I don’t see any way around a more serious depression – the Greater Depression. It’s been going on since 2008, will get much worse, and has years left to run.

FDR himself was extraordinarily lucky. His performance looks successful because when he entered office, both the economy and the stock market were overdue for a cyclical recovery (nothing goes straight down forever). He was elected when the depression had already been going on for four years and the stock market had already fallen 90%. That fortunate timing was partly a gift from Hoover, whose large-scale interference in the economy had kept the depression going. (It’s odd how people believe Hoover was the free-marketeer and Roosevelt was the interventionist. Roosevelt really just continued and extended Hoover’s policies, but with more enthusiasm and far better PR.)

Roosevelt had more good luck (for him) with the arrival of WW2; the victories in Europe and the Pacific forever idealized every aspect of his administration. In many ways, the cult of FDR resembles that of Russia’s Joseph Stalin, who is still worshipped there as a demigod.

Although Obama seems bright enough, there’s little reason to believe he’s a student of history and no reason to believe he’s a student of economics. It’s more likely that he’s just a student of power politics, so he’s inclined to follow the conventional wisdom, which is that a combination of Roosevelt’s “bold action” in the New Deal plus World War 2 brought the country out of the Great Depression. What we hope to show here is that those notions are nonsense.

The Last Depression

How, in fact, did America recover from the Great Depression? The stock answer is: “World War 2.” But a closer look at the data reveals a different answer.

Standard mythology claims that war production – beginning in 1939 – ended our economic troubles. But the American economy didn’t truly recover until two years after the fighting stopped in 1945. In point of fact, the last depression ran from 1929 to 1947, about 18 years.

And it wasn’t a single terrible decline. As the chart above shows, GDP growth was falling in 1930, recovered from 1932 to 1936, and then began a second collapse in 1937, a down-leg due mostly to Roosevelt’s policies.

Then, in 1939, industrial production began a tremendous expansion. The unemployed were put to work either fighting or manufacturing armaments. But neither activity contributed to the general standard of living. And even if it had, the growth in production wasn’t and couldn’t have been self-sustaining, since it was in fact a growth in the squandering of resources.

The conventions for measuring GDP include government expenditures, so GDP is a poor measure of underlying economic health. The government might, for instance, hire 10 million people to dig ditches during the day, 10 million more to fill them in at night, and 5 million bureaucrats to monitor the work. That would pump up GDP and reduce unemployment, but it wouldn’t increase society’s wealth. It would decrease it.

In any event, as soon as the government’s large wartime expenditures started dropping in 1945, GDP resumed the shrinking that had begun in 1930.

The GDP growth of the war years was a prosperity mirage that dissipated when government spending stopped, unlike the wealth-creating expansion from 1932 to 1936 that had been fueled by private investment. In 1936, GDP rose $10.5 billion while government spending rose just $2.2 billion. In 1942, GDP rose $35.2 billion while government spending rose $36.1 billion. The apparent growth during the war was all government spending.

Roosevelt’s Second Act

What caused the recovery to collapse in 1936?

One element was Roosevelt’s attack on the rich. In 1935, he launched a barrage of new taxes, including a corporate income tax of 15%, a dividend tax, higher estate and gift taxes, and additional taxes on those earning more than $50,000. The top rate on individual income taxes rose to 79% in 1936, a large jump from 63% just the previous year.

On top of this, Roosevelt’s rhetoric and actions turned increasingly anti-business. Roosevelt began to strongly support organized labor – which was nice for those who had union cards, but no help for those who didn’t have the connections or skin color to get one, and great harm for the economy as a whole. His support got results. In 1935, there were only 3.8 million union members in the U.S. By 1941, there were about 10 million, approximately a quarter of the workforce.

The 1936 elections gave the country de facto one-party rule – 76 Democrats in the Senate and 331 Democrats in the House of Representatives. Each new piece of legislation berated and punished business – such as the Wagner Act, the ever higher taxing Revenue Acts, and Undistributed Profits Tax. With the government growing larger while business lacked strong representation in the halls of power, it is no wonder that private investment stalled.

Government Versus Private Investment

Government expenditure as a percentage of GDP drives the point home even more. Throughout World War 2, the private market remained in the dumps.

War spending added to the GDP numbers. And there was real progress in areas like aviation, electronics, and atomic energy – albeit at a gigantic cost. But none of this jump-started the private economy, which focuses on the products and services people really want.
You don’t need a doctorate in economics to understand this chart. The only major peak during the war marks the end of hostilities – and FDR’s death. (We’ll get to that in a moment). Note that the 1932-1936 recovery was far more significant than the often-glorified war economy.

Why didn’t FDR’s immense spending jolt the private market back to life? Remember that a wartime economy comes with strings attached; it’s not free money. Wartime regulations made operating any business almost impossible. Nearly everything required government permission. Taxes skyrocketed, leaving less capital for investment. Further, forget about competing for resources with the war industry; even if you had a good business idea, you wouldn’t be allowed to execute it.

An economy can’t prosper when markets are being overruled by command-and-control rationing. During the war, companies found it easier and more profitable to produce for government than to produce for consumers. Even companies such as Eastman Kodak, the film and camera company, began manufacturing rifle scopes and hand grenades for the military. GM stopped making cars for civilians and made military vehicles instead. Tires, gasoline, shoes, beef, sugar, coffee and much else were rationed. The standard of living in the U.S. during the war collapsed; conditions for consumers were much worse than in the ‘30s. Remember that the best definition of a depression is: A period of time when most people’s standard of living falls significantly.

Without productive private investment, recovery is impossible. Near the end of the war, as government spending subsided, private investment did return to the U.S. But that never happened in the USSR, China, or Eastern Europe, which is why they never did recover. Lack of private investment is why Britain remained something of a dump right up to the election of Thatcher. Wartime spending didn’t help the recovery, it slowed it.

During the war, a majority of businessmen – typically over 75% – believed the U.S. would retain the fascist-style economic system that it had grown into during the ‘30s and that it seemed to be cemented into by the war. With that thought so widespread, the lack of private investment is no surprise.

But with the closing of WWII, the fear of being locked into a command-and-control economy began to ease – an unintended consequence of FDR’s wiliness. FDR knew that the business world would cooperate in wartime production only if business leaders were running the show. He slowly began replacing New Dealers in his administration with the businessmen who had been squashed by New Deal policies. The new recruits worked behind the scenes in Washington to undo what the early New Dealers had accomplished. Necessity had overcome ideology.

On top of that, the Democrats were losing their grip on Congress. By 1944, they had only 56 senators and 242 representatives. In 1946, the Republicans regained both houses of Congress.

And FDR himself died, which left businessmen feeling a lot safer. The long dark night of anti-business tirades and crusades had ended. The Dow made a significant jump, and so did the daily volume on his death.

Sure, Truman was still around, but he didn’t have Roosevelt’s dangerous popularity. As a result, private investment flooded the post-war market, and a boom followed. Where did the capital to fuel the post-war boom come from? In a way, it was an accident of wartime policies.

During the war, the personal savings rate skyrocketed. There were plenty of reasons for that. For one, quality durable goods exempt from wartime rationing were difficult to find even if one wanted to buy them. Second, a big war creates uncertainty. If you’re not sure whether a husband or father will return alive, saving makes sense. The importance of savings in the 1940s is a reason for pessimism about our prospects today: unlike during WW2, today’s savings rate is still negligible. And the artificially low interest rates the government has engineered continue to discourage saving and to encourage consumption, debt, and speculation.

When the war ended, the accumulated savings supported both investing and consumer spending. It’s an experience that refutes the Keynesian notion that consumer spending stimulates the economy and saving suppresses it.

You can’t solve today’s problem of overconsumption and debt with more overconsumption and debt. The conditions that pulled America out of the Great Depression underscore that point. Once savings rates increased and made capital available for the economy, private investment soared, and shortly afterward, so did the rest of the economy.

Although history doesn’t repeat, this time it definitely rhymes. The Obama administration is trying to replay all of Roosevelt’s moves, and it’s making all of FDR’s mistakes in spades and more. The Obama bailouts of public companies are a new twist – even FDR didn’t go that far. The U.S. is already in a war economy. Will Obama ramp up the wars, thinking that what’s been done so far isn’t enough?

The bottom line is that, based on everything we know about the Great Depression, the Greater Depression, which is still in its early stages, is going to be nasty indeed.

Dear Reader,

At the onset of the financial crisis, many commentators predicted the end of capitalism. With free markets still around in a weakened form, the predictions were a little too bold. Sure, things are a lot worse, but the expected swing toward socialism didn’t go all the way. However, some intellectual ideas did die in the crash. Most importantly, any structure of a macroeconomic worldview has fallen apart –primarily in the media.

What do I mean? Previously, booms and busts were understood to be the phenomenon of business cycles. Despite conflicting theories from various schools of thought, economists recognized the presence of repeated business cycles. But today the business cycle seems all but forgotten in the press. Anything and everything is blamed for the crash other than business cycles. The accusations range from risk-taking on Wall Street to excessive bonuses, to regulations. Some of the favorite ones include the Community Reinvestment Act and the repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act.

And of course, these regulations had a role to play, but the Federal Reserve played the leading part. With a short look back at history, the other explanations fail to account for previous booms and busts. Did the Community Reinvestment Act and Financial Services Modernization Act cause the dot-com bubble? What about the recession in 1991? And there are many more recessions throughout history; new regulations cannot possibly explain everything.

Well, what about the subprime mortgages? Certainly those caused the crash. Yes and no. This time it was subprime mortgages, last time it was tech, and next time it’ll be something else. Ultimately, an extended period of low interest rates led to the crisis. Too much credit in the market gave entrepreneurs and companies the illusion of real prosperity. Businesses engaged in projects expecting sustained prosperity. In the case of housing, the demand seemed strong and endless. But unfortunately, it was only driven by the low cost of borrowing – not real wealth in society. When interest rates began to rise, the artificial wealth contracted. Projects that were built on the expectation of ever-increasing wealth suddenly went bust, and the entire economy experienced a massive contraction.

The same scenario has happened time and time again. Regulations, mortgages, and excessive risk-taking are just minor details in the big picture of the business cycle. Every crash has its own set of characters and problems, but they’re not the real causes of the bust.

At the beginning of the Obama administration’s term in office, the Left often blamed the crisis on “the policies of the last eight years.” This always makes me think, “Well, what policies specifically?” Even the items mentioned in the intro didn’t start in the last administration. The Financial Services Modernization Act that got rid of Glass-Steagall was passed in 1999. The CRA wasn’t exactly a Republican agenda either. Also, don’t forget that Fannie and Freddie were busy and empowered throughout the ‘90s.

Then there are the low interest rates. But this was a policy of the Federal Reserve and not the Bush administration. Also, the Democrats can’t possibly mean low rates since today’s rates are even lower. The “last eight years of policy” quote shows how ignorant the Democrats really are about business cycles. It’s essentially like saying “Some stuff from the past eight years caused this, but we’re really not sure what the actual problem is.” As a result, they blame bonuses, proprietary trading, a sudden burst of greed, or some other mumbo-jumbo that has nothing to do with the business cycle.

THE TRUTH ABOUT UNEMPLOYMENT

ON NUCLEAR ENERGY...

Let’s begin by understanding that the scale of the energy stored at the nucleus of the atom is so great — so completely unlike anything in human history — that people are having a hard time understanding it. Everybody thinks of the atom in terms of a big, big bomb. But that’s the wrong approach. You have to think of it as a small, small amount of matter producing almost unimaginable amounts of energy. That’s what makes uranium so easy on the environment — because it takes only a very small quantity of material to produce statewide levels of electrical power.

Let’s look at some numbers. Fossil fuels, as you know, are a concentrated form of solar energy. Plants capture sunlight and use it to create long hydrocarbons. When these plants or algae are fossilized over millions and millions of years they become oil, coal and gas. In the process, the energy is concentrated. Coal has about twice the energy density of wood and oil and natural gas are about double the density of coal.

Sunlight and wind and so-called “renewables” are even more dilute than wood, by a factor of about 10 to 50. When you’re thinking in terms of industrial quantities, the amount of sunlight falling on any square yard of earth is miniscule — about enough to power one 100-watt light bulb. That means collecting solar energy consumes huge amounts of land. If we covered every building in the country with solar panels, we could probably get enough electricity to supply our indoor (about 8 percent of our consumption) — and that only in the daytime. The solar thermal plants being considered in Florida and California — where they used mirrors to concentrate sunlight to boil water — will cover a hundred or more square miles to match one coal or nuclear plant. We’re building these things because the federal and state governments are providing huge tax subsidies and many states are even mandating that utilities buy the power. But once the size and expense of these projects becomes clear, a lot of people are going to start to object.

The same goes for wind farms, which will also cover hundreds of square miles with 65-story structures. The problem with wind is that it is totally unpredictable and very difficult to integrate onto an electrical grid. At least solar electricity is there when you need it — on hot sunny days when everyone turns on the air conditioning. Wind comes and goes at it pleases but tends to blow hardest when it’s not needed — at night and during the spring and fall. Biofuels, another form of “alternate energy,” ran into trouble last winder when people suddenly became aware of the huge amounts of land they consume. We’re now fomenting 30 percent of the corn crop and replacing only 3 percent of our oil — plus pushing up world food prices. The U.N. is calling biofuels a “crime against humanity.” Supporters talk about “cellulose ethanol” but it’s never been done and they’ve been trying for almost a hundred years.

Now let’s look at nuclear. Remember, when we talked about the energy density of fossil fuels and renewables we talked in factors of 2 thru 50. Do you know what the density factor is for uranium? It’s 2 million. A pound of uranium gives you 2 million times as much energy as a pound of coal. That means you can run a whole city for a week with a lump of uranium you can hold in one hand. In fact a 110-car “unit train” of coal has more energy in the uranium traces in the coal than in the coal itself.

Let’s see what this means in practice. The average 1,000-megawatt coal plant must be fed by a unit train arriving at the plant every day. Such trains now leave Cheyenne, Wyoming every 12 minutes carrying coal from the Powder River Basin to power plants from Nevada to Arkansas. More than half the nation’s rail freight is now coal. In fact, it’s straining the whole infrastructure and we may have to build new rail lines before long.

Now lets’ look at nuclear. A 1000-MW nuclear reactor is refueled by a single tractor-trailer arriving at the plant once every eighteen months. The fuel rods are only mildly radioactive and can be handled with gloves. Over their four-and-a-half-year life cycle those fuel rods will put zero greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Meanwhile, the coal plant across town will spew 3 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. That’s why we have a problem of global warming.

Where does all this energy come from? To understand, you have to look at Einstein’s famous formula, E = mc2. Everybody knows about it — Mariah Carey named her latest album after it — but how many people understand exactly what it means?

E = mc2 means matter can be transformed into energy and energy can be transformed into matter. The important thing is that co-efficient — the speed of light squared. That’s a very, very large number — about one quadrillion. That means a very, very small amount of matter can be transformed into a very, very large amount of energy. That’s what happens when we put uranium in a nuclear reactor.

Burning fossil fuels also involves transforming matter into energy, but those reactions are “chemical,” meaning they take place in the electron shell. Electrons make up 1/1800th of the mass of an atom so there isn’t that much matter there. The other 1,799/1,800ths is in the nucleus, where the protons and neutrons reside. (You remember all this from high school, right?) That’s why transformations in the nucleus release such extraordinarily large quantities of energy — 2 million times what we can get from fossil fuels and 10-to-100 million times what we can get from wind and solar energy. The result is an impact on the environment that is two to twenty million times smaller. That’s why nuclear power — the greatest scientific discovery of the 20th century — is also the best friend the earth’s natural environment ever had.

So what can possibly be wrong with nuclear power? Is it prohibitively dangerous? Is a nuclear reactor an atomic bomb waiting to explode? And the perennial question — what are we going to do with all that horrible nuclear waste?

Let’s start with the idea that a reactor can explode. The next time someone asks you this, answer them, “Do you have a jar of Vaseline at home in your medicine cabinet? And if so, do you lie awake at night worrying that it’s going to explode like a jar of napalm and set your house on fire?” Look on the side of the Vaseline jar. It says “petroleum jelly.” It’s made out from oil. What is napalm? It is jellied gasoline. Can’t Vaseline blow up like napalm? Obviously not. But why? Because they contain different fractions of petroleum with different volatilities.

It’s the same with uranium. There are two types of uranium — “isotopes,” as we say. (They have different numbers of neutrons.) U-238 (238 neutrons) makes up 99.3 percent of the natural ore. It sheds a couple of protons occasionally but its half-life is 5 billion years and it’s relatively harmless. (The longer the half-life, the less “radioactive” an element is.) Uranium-235 is the powerhouse. It can split in half — “fission” — releasing huge amounts of energy. But U-235 constitutes only 0.7 percent of the natural ore. It’s so sparse it can’t undergo the “chain reaction” that leads one breakdown of an atom to produce others.

As a result, in order to set of a chain reaction you have to “enrich” the U-235 to a higher percentage than the natural ore. This is extremely difficult because it can’t be done chemically — they both have the same chemical properties. Instead, you have to build a factory the size of a Ford plant and separate them by various techniques such as running them through magnetic fields or whipping them around in centrifuges. That’s what we did in the Manhattan Project.

But there are different degrees of enrichment. In order to produce the nice calm chain reaction you get in a nuclear reactor — enough heat to boil water — you enrich the U-235 from 0.7 to 3 percent. That’s reasonably doable. In order to enrich up to bomb-grade material, however, you have to enrich to — can you guess? — 90 percent. That takes a long, long time and a lot of work. The Iranians have been trying to do it for years and haven’t gotten very far. But that’s the reason a nuclear power plant can’t blow up like a bomb. It’s like the jar of Vaseline in your medicine cabinet — there’s not nearly enough of the key ingredient in there to explode. It’s also the reason why it’s much more difficult to build a nuclear weapon than most people imagine.

Now how about that matter of “nuclear waste?” Once again it pays to know what you’re talking about. Basically, there is no such thing as “nuclear waste.” It’s not like you’re burning coal — where you end up with gargantuan amounts of something you can’t use, like carbon dioxide. Nearly all the material in a spent fuel rod is recyclable or easily handled. Ninety-five percent of a spent fuel rod is U-238 — the same natural uranium that comes out of the ground. We could just put it back where it came from. The other 5 percent is fissionable U-235 (1 percent), various “fission products” from the breakdown of U-235 (2 percent), plus a group called the “minor actinides” which are formed when U-238 is transmuted into heavier, man-made elements (2 percent). Among the minor actinides is plutonium (1 percent), one of whose isotopes can be used for making bombs.

So why are we do we need Yucca Mountain, a huge repository designed to “bury” 77,000 tons of “nuclear waste,” when 95 percent of the material is non-fissioning natural uranium? We’re doing it because in 1976, President Jimmy Carter — a President many people feel Barack Obama may eventually resemble — got cold feet and outlawed the reprocessing of spent fuel. Instead of treating it in an environmentally efficient way and recycling, we ended up with huge, mixed-up gobs of material that we can’t think of anything to do with except “throw it away.”

Almost everything in a spent fuel rod can be recycled. The U-235 can be used again for fuel. So can the plutonium. Among the fission products and minor actinides there are lots of useful isotopes used in medicine and industrial procedures. Forty percent of all medical procedures now involve some radioactive isotope and nuclear medicine is a $250-billion industry. Unfortunately, we must now import all our medical isotopes from Canada because ours are all being treated as “nuclear waste.”

The French have complete recycling. (I know you talk about France’s nuclear power a lot but I doubt you know this.) They take plutonium from spent fuel, mix it with uranium depleted by enrichment, and call it “mixed oxide fuel.” It’s sold all over Europe and Japan. They’re also importing bomb-grade uranium from old Russian nuclear weapons, mixing it with the tailings from uranium mines (another “waste product”) and shipping it to the United States of America as reactor fuel. It’s a treaty engineered by your old colleagues Senators Pete Domenici and Sam Nunn in the 1990s. One out of every ten light bulbs in America is now being lit by a former Soviet weapon! It’s the greatest swords-into-plowshares effort in history — although very few people know about it. Things nuclear, of course, are not the subject of polite conversation.

So what’s left when all this reprocessing is done? Essentially nothing. All of France’s nuclear waste from 25 years of producing 75 percent of its electricity is stored beneath the floor of one room at Le Hague. The lifetime output for each French citizen would fit in a soda can. That’s what the incredible energy density of nuclear power can do for the environment.

Want to hear one more irony? The reason we gave up reprocessing in the 1970s was because we thought we were stopping nuclear proliferation. The idea had gotten around that terrorists or somebody from another country would steal plutonium from an American reactor and use it to make a bomb. As it turns out, proliferation has not taken this route. Countries that wanted nuclear weapons — China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, Iran, Israel and South Africa — have built their own reactors or smuggled material from friendly countries.

But that’s not the real irony. The most preposterous thing is you can’t build a bomb from the plutonium in a commercial reactor. You have to build a special reactor for making only bomb material. (That’s what the Russians were doing at Chernobyl.) The reason is this. There are four plutonium isotopes produced in a commercial reactor. Only one of them — Pu-239 — can be used to make a bomb. The others are too fissionable or not fissionable enough. They “poison” the chain reaction by going off too slowly or too quickly. At best you can get a bomb maybe big enough to blow up a single building. (The terrorists have already figured out how to do this with airplanes.) In order to separate the plutonium isotopes, you’d have to build an enrichment plant far more complicated than the ones used to enrich uranium. Nobody has ever done it. So plutonium from our reactors is essentially useless, except for producing more electricity.

Nuclear experts knew this all along but nobody ever listens to them. In fact, this whole country is filled with nuclear engineers and scientists who know that nuclear power is the greatest gift ever bestowed on humanity but most of them have quit trying to make their case. Instead, the discussion is dominated by the Ralph Naders and Robert Redfords and Sierra Club tyros who basically don’t know what they’re talking about.

So there you are, Senator. Nuclear power is humanity’s next great industrial advance. It’s going to give us a whole new, clean source of energy that will scale to our industrial society. It will even give us enough electricity to convert our transportation sector to electric or hydrogen cars. It will free us from foreign oil, provide enough good jobs for tens of thousands of construction workers and highly skilled nuclear operators and engineers — and cure global warming as well! What more could you ask? What better platform to run for president in 2008?

And in case you’re listening, Senator Obama, you too should shed that half-hearted endorsement of nuclear power and embrace it as the technology of the future. It will be the only thing that that will set us on the right path for solving the nation’s problems if you become president.

We are told again and again by 'experts' and 'talking heads' that

Islam is the religion of peace and that the vast majority of Muslims

just want to live in peace. Although this unqualified assertion may be

true, it is entirely irrelevant. It is meaningless fluff, meant to make

us feel better, and meant to somehow diminish the spectre of fanatics

rampaging across the globe in the name of Islam.

The fact is that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history. It

is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50

shooting wars worldwide. It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter

Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking

over the entire continent in an Islamic wave. It is the fanatics who

bomb, behead, murder, or honour-kill. It is the fanatics who take over

mosque after mosque. It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning

and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals. It is the fanatics who

teach their young to kill and to become suicide bombers.

The hard, quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the 'silent

majority,' is cowed and extraneous.

Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in

peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of

about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. China's

huge population was peaceful as well, but Chinese Communists managed to

kill a staggering 70 million people.

The average Japanese individual prior to World War II was not a

warmongering sadist. Yet, Japan murdered and slaughtered its way across

South East Asia in an orgy of killing that included the systematic

murder of 12 million Chinese civilians; most killed by sword, shovel,

and bayonet.

And who can forget Rwanda, which collapsed into butchery. Could it not

be said that the majority of Rwandans were 'peace loving'?

History lessons are often incredibly simple and blunt, yet for all our

powers of reason, we often miss the most basic and uncomplicated of

points:

Peace-loving Muslims have been made irrelevant by their silence.

Peace-loving Muslims will become our enemy if they don't speak up,

because like my friend from Germany, they will awaken one day and find

that the fanatics own them, and the end of their world will have begun.

Peace-loving Germans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, Rwandans, Serbs,

Afghans, Iraqis, Palestinians, Somalis, Nigerians, Algerians, and many

others have died because the peaceful majority did not speak up until it

was too late. As for us who watch it all unfold, we must pay attention

to the only group that counts--the fanatics who threaten our way of

life.

How are you and the family ? All's ok here in the mountains of America...still wish I was in Afghanistan though.....I sure loved what I was doing and the resulting effect it had on our war fighters. As the election draws ever nearer, let's keep our eye on the ball. Polls are interesting, exciting and often predictive, but these are the numbers that matter most to regular Americans:

President Obama and the Democrats enacted $352 billion in net tax hikes.

The national unemployment rate Is 9.6%.

The real unemployment rate -- including those forced to work part-time because they can't find full-time work iIs 17.1%.
Since the stimulus was passed, the US has lost 2.6 million jobs.

January 1st will bring the biggest tax increase in history, including higher death taxes and higher taxes on personal income, marriage and family, and savers and investors. Capital gains will rise from 15% to 20%; taxes on dividends will rise from 15% to 39.6% next year and even higher thereafter.

Nancy Pelosi -- a multimillionaire in her own right -- and her family took 85 trips in military aircraft between March of '09 and June of '10, at a cost of more than $2 million taxpayer dollars. Over $100,000 of that total was spent on in-flight food and alcohol -- again, courtesy of the taxpayers.

These numbers matter. We're living them, so learn them and repeat them often in the next few weeks.

A Lesson in Liberal Finance

Last week I had the opportunity to speak with a small businessman who devised a simple lesson in the liberal thought process as it relates to redistribution of wealth.

This entrepreneur has a very small company and hires seasonal help as his work load increases. During the summer, he hired an energetic 21-year old. This lad was a good worker and always showed up on time. One morning the worker had to meet his employer at the job site, so he drove his own car. There, on the back bumper was an Obama/Biden bumper sticker from the 2008 election.

Later that afternoon, the conversation turned to politics and the boss asked his temporary employee why he supported Obama.

"I just think that there are too many people with too much money" he said. He went on to detail how the Obama mantra of redistribution was good for poor people. The boss then asked him "Who gets to decide when you've made enough money and where that money should go?" The employee responded with a shrug and said "the government." After two hours of back and forth, the boss gave up trying to educate the employee and opted for another form of teaching.

The Friday of that same week, the boss handed his employee a paycheck. Anxious to see and spend his first paycheck, the employee opened the envelope. His smile quickly turned to a saddened frown. He quietly walked over to the boss. "Sir, I thought that you said I would be making $10 an hour, right?"

"Yup" came the reply. "You're getting $10 per hour."

"But I worked 30 hours this week and my paycheck isn't anywhere near $300"

"Yup, you did work 30 hours. Your gross would've been $300, but I figured that you live at home with your parents, so you don't need rent money. Your mom has a garden, so you don't need food money. When you're working, we drive in the work van, so you don't need any gas money. You got me to thinking this week about the Obama plan to redistribute wealth. I thought I would put it to work here in my little business. I took your advice and took some of those earnings that you don't need. I'm going to find a family whose dad has decided that he doesn't want to work and he needs money for cigarettes. Basically, I'll find someone who needs it more than you do."

The employee stood there shell-shocked for a full minute. The boss gently grabbed the paycheck from the employee and tore it up. "Here's your real check" he said as he extended his hand with another envelope. "You might want to rethink this whole idea of taking money from working people and giving it to others. Whether it's taken out in taxes or taken directly from you, the bottom line is that it is taken from you. Whether it's taken by the government or taken by force at the end of a gun barrel...should they not both be considered theft?"

Why is it that they don't teach this in school?

For all those who continue to doubt the statistically questionable methods of our Labor Department, as well as for all others who mock those who doubt the veracity out of anything coming out of the BLS, the following chart should provide much needed closure. The top section of the chart below demonstrates weekly prior revisions in initial claims for all of 2010. Readers may be surprised to discover that beginning in April, of 2010, continuing through today, there have been 22 out of 23 consecutive upward prior weekly revisions! In other words, the BLS has a definitive mandate to underrepresent the "current" weekly data and to allow it to catch up with reality once it has become "prior", and thus no longer market moving, when in reality should the BLS present true data it would have likely missed estimates on more than half the occasions it has "beaten" and caused ridiculous market spikes like the one experienced earlier. Furthermore, combining all individual weekly data, demonstrates that the BLS has underrepresented initial claims by roughly 80,000 year to date. The chart pretty much leaves no room for doubt as to the BLS "trans-statistical" approach to quantifying data. As for the lower chart, it shows the same thing but with continuing claims, which have been revised upward pretty much consecutively for the entire year.

American capitalism gone with a whimperIt must be said, that like the breaking of a great dam, the American decent into Marxism is happening with breath taking speed, against the back drop of a passive, hapless sheeple, excuse me dear reader, I meant people.

True, the situation has been well prepared on and off for the past century, especially the past twenty years. The initial testing grounds was conducted upon our Holy Russia and a bloody test it was. But we Russians would not just roll over and give up our freedoms and our souls, no matter how much money Wall Street poured into the fists of the Marxists.

Those lessons were taken and used to properly prepare the American populace for the surrender of their freedoms and souls, to the whims of their elites and betters.

First, the population was dumbed down through a politicized and substandard education system based on pop culture, rather then the classics. Americans know more about their favorite TV dramas then the drama in DC that directly affects their lives. They care more for their "right" to choke down a McDonalds burger or a BurgerKing burger than for their constitutional rights. Then they turn around and lecture us about our rights and about our "democracy". Pride blind the foolish.

Then their faith in God was destroyed, until their churches, all tens of thousands of different "branches and denominations" were for the most part little more then Sunday circuses and their televangelists and top protestant mega preachers were more then happy to sell out their souls and flocks to be on the "winning" side of one pseudo Marxist politician or another. Their flocks may complain, but when explained that they would be on the "winning" side, their flocks were ever so quick to reject Christ in hopes for earthly power. Even our Holy Orthodox churches are scandalously liberalized in America.

The final collapse has come with the election of Barack Obama. His speed in the past three months has been truly impressive. His spending and money printing has been a record setting, not just in America's short history but in the world. If this keeps up for more then another year, and there is no sign that it will not, America at best will resemble the Wiemar Republic and at worst Zimbabwe.

These past two weeks have been the most breath taking of all. First came the announcement of a planned redesign of the American Byzantine tax system, by the very thieves who used it to bankroll their thefts, loses and swindles of hundreds of billions of dollars. These make our Russian oligarchs look little more then ordinary street thugs, in comparison. Yes, the Americans have beat our own thieves in the shear volumes. Should we congratulate them?

These men, of course, are not an elected panel but made up of appointees picked from the very financial oligarchs and their henchmen who are now gorging themselves on trillions of American dollars, in one bailout after another. They are also usurping the rights, duties and powers of the American congress (parliament). Again, congress has put up little more then a whimper to their masters.

Then came Barack Obama's command that GM's (General Motor) president step down from leadership of his company. That is correct, dear reader, in the land of "pure" free markets, the American president now has the power, the self given power, to fire CEOs and we can assume other employees of private companies, at will. Come hither, go dither, the centurion commands his minions.

So it should be no surprise, that the American president has followed this up with a "bold" move of declaring that he and another group of unelected, chosen stooges will now redesign the entire automotive industry and will even be the guarantee of automobile policies. I am sure that if given the chance, they would happily try and redesign it for the whole of the world, too. Prime Minister Putin, less then two months ago, warned Obama and UK's Blair, not to follow the path to Marxism, it only leads to disaster. Apparently, even though we suffered 70 years of this Western sponsored horror show, we know nothing, as foolish, drunken Russians, so let our "wise" Anglo-Saxon fools find out the folly of their own pride.

Again, the American public has taken this with barely a whimper...but a "freeman" whimper.

So, should it be any surprise to discover that the Democratically controlled Congress of America is working on passing a new regulation that would give the American Treasury department the power to set "fair" maximum salaries, evaluate performance and control how private companies give out pay raises and bonuses? Senator Barney Franks, a social pervert basking in his homosexuality (of course, amongst the modern, enlightened American societal norm, as well as that of the general West, homosexuality is not only not a looked down upon life choice, but is often praised as a virtue) and his Marxist enlightenment, has led this effort. He stresses that this only affects companies that receive government monies, but it is retroactive and taken to a logical extreme, this would include any company or industry that has ever received a tax break or incentive.

The Russian owners of American companies and industries should look thoughtfully at this and the option of closing their facilities down and fleeing the land of the Red as fast as possible. In other words, divest while there is still value left.

The proud American will go down into his slavery with out a fight, beating his chest and proclaiming to the world, how free he really is. The world will only snicker.

In the left hand corner of the painting sits a man. That man, with his head bowed appears distraught and hopeless as he contemplates his future.

Some of the past Presidents try to console him while looking in the direction of the modern Presidents as if to say, "What have you done?" Wow! Talk about change.

Just one year ago, fresh from his inauguration celebrations, President Obama was flying high. After one of the nation's most inspiring political campaigns, the election of America's first black president had captured the hopes and dreams of millions. To his devout followers, it was inconceivable that a year later his administration would be gripped in self-imposed crisis.

Of course, they don't see it as self-imposed. It's all George Bush's fault.

George Bush, who doesn't have a vote in congress and who no longer occupies the White House, is to blame for it all.

He broke Obama's promise to put all bills on the White House web site for five days before signing them.

He broke Obama's promise to have the congressional health care negotiations broadcast live on C-SPAN.

He broke Obama's promise to end earmarks.

He broke Obama's promise to keep unemployment from rising above 8 percent.

He broke Obama's promise to close the detention center at Guantanamo in the first year.

He broke Obama's promise to make peace with direct, no precondition talks with America's most hate-filled enemies during his first year in office, ushering in a new era of global cooperation.

He broke Obama's promise to end the hiring of former lobbyists into high White House jobs.

He broke Obama's promise to end no-compete contracts with the government.

He broke Obama's promise to disclose the names of all attendees at closed White House meetings.

He broke Obama's promise for a new era of bipartisan cooperation in all matters.

He broke Obama's promise to have chosen a home church to attend Sunday services with his family by Easter of last year.

Yes, it's all George Bush's fault. President Obama is nothing more than a puppet in the never-ending failed Bush administration.

If only George Bush wasn't still in charge, all of President Obama's problems would be solved. His promises would have been kept, the economy would be back on track, Iran would have stopped its work on developing a nuclear bomb and would be negotiating a peace treaty with Israel. North Korea would have ended its tyrannical regime, and integrity would have been restored to the federal government.

Oh, and did I mention what it would be like if the Democrats, under the leadership of Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, didn't have the heavy yoke of George Bush around their necks? There would be no ear marks, no closed-door drafting of bills, no increase in deficit spending, no special-interest influence (unions), no vote buying (Nebraska, Louisiana).

If only George Bush wasn't still in charge, we'd have real change by now.

All the broken promises, all the failed legislation and delay (health care reform, immigration reform) is not President Obama's fault or the fault of the Democrat-controlled Congress. It's all George Bush's fault.

Take for example the decision of Eric Holder, the president's attorney general, to hold terrorists' trials in New York City. Or his decision to try the Christmas Day underpants bomber as a civilian.

Two disastrous decisions.

Certainly those were bad judgments based on poor advice from George Bush.

You might recall that when Scott Brown won the election to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts , capturing "the Ted Kennedy seat", President Obama said that Brown's victory was the result of the same voter anger that propelled Obama into office in 2008. People were still angry about George Bush and the policies of the past 10 years. And they wanted change.

Yes, according to the president, the voter rebellion in Massachusetts was George Bush's fault.

Therefore, in retaliation, they elected a Republican to the Ted Kennedy seat, ending a half-century of domination by Democrats. It is all George Bush's fault.

Will the failed administration of George Bush ever end, and the time for hope and change ever arrive?

Stimulus Fact Check

This week, AP fact-checked the Obama Administration’s assertion that the stimulus is helping. While the 9.5% unemployment rate and hundreds of thousands of new jobless claims show the stimulus plan has failed, AP looks at some specific initiatives, and proves the administration dead wrong.

AP: FACT CHECK: Stimulus assessments overly optimistic

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration claimed this week that $100 billion invested in innovative technologies under the economic stimulus law is "transforming the American economy" by putting the nation on track for technological breakthroughs in health care, energy and transportation.

But an examination of details in the 50-page report unveiled Tuesday by Vice President Joe Biden reveals something a bit different: a collection of rosy projections that ignore many of the challenges, pitfalls and economic realities in all those areas.

A look at how the administration's claims compare to the facts:

Increasing renewable energy

The claim: Thanks to the stimulus, the United States is on track to "doubling U.S. renewable energy generation capacity and U.S. renewable manufacturing capacity by 2012."

The facts: While the Recovery Act has helped increase renewable energy, the fact that it is a one-time jolt makes it difficult to project that the growth will continue for the next couple of years. George Sterzinger, executive director of the Renewable Energy Policy Project, a Washington think tank that promotes renewable energy, said the Recovery Act's cash grant program for renewable energy projects "jump-started a lot of stuff. But there's nothing beyond that."

Sterzinger added that it would be a mistake to link the growth in renewable energy generation to the growth in American-made renewable energy equipment. While the U.S. could probably meet the first goal, he said, it isn't likely to meet the second because much of the equipment is made overseas.

Robert L. Nelson, a partner at the Akin Gump law firm who co-chairs its renewable energy group, said that the manufacturing claim reminded him of a story told in the old Soviet Union. A commissar, or government official, asks a farmer how good next year's crop will be. The farmer says it will be 10 times as good as last year's. The commissar thinks to himself, "Ten times zero is zero."

Nelson said, "When you're looking at where the U.S. is starting from, doubling isn't all that meaningful a statistic."

Cutting the cost of solar power

The claim: Government stimulus money will lead to "cutting the cost of solar power in half by 2015, putting it on par with the cost of retail electricity from the grid."

The facts: That projection assumes a huge payoff from stimulus spending on technology improvements in solar energy. Nelson, who has worked in renewable energy for 25 years, called the prediction "highly unlikely," unless there is a big increase in utility-scale solar power projects.

Sterzinger said there was too much uncertainty in the world economy to make such a prediction.

"Projecting from the last few years looks at the effects of a global recession that lowers material costs and a temporary glut of module manufacturing capacity," he said. "They have influenced cost but are not based on any technology innovation."

Quicker, cheaper genetic mapping

The claim: Stimulus funding is spurring National Institutes of Health research to make unraveling people's individual genetic codes, or genomes, easy and cheap enough that the number completed could "dwarf, by 50 times or so" the number so far finished.

The facts: NIH research kicked off the revolution in human genome sequencing and continues to play a crucial role, but it has lots of help today from universities, international research foundations and even private companies jockeying to sell better gene-scanning machines.

It cost about $3 billion and a decade of government research to come up with the first draft of a human genome in 2000. Last year, a Stanford University professor reported that he sequenced his genome in a week at a cost of $48,000, using a $1 million machine. Many specialists believe the price may drop to less than $1,000 in a few years. The more sequencing scientists do allows them to better explore variations that contribute to disease.

As promising as personal genome sequencing is, people need to understand that it's basically a first step. The bigger challenge, still in its infancy, is deciphering what the genetic variations mean and how that information might be harnessed for better care.
High-speed rail

The claim: "With $8 billion in funding, the Recovery Act is beginning to make high-speed rail a reality across the country." Projects selected for funds represent "strategic investments" that will yield high-speed service or lay the groundwork for future service.

The facts: The largest project is one that would connect San Francisco with Los Angeles, using trains traveling up to 220 mph. But some of the projects getting stimulus money would primarily upgrade existing freight rail tracks so they could be used for faster passenger service, reaching speeds of up to 110 mph at least part of the time — well short of the speeds in other developed countries.

Not everyone shares the White House's optimism about the prospects for high-speed rail. A recent analysis by the Government Accountability Office concluded that building high-speed rail service in the U.S. "is a difficult, multiyear effort" that hinges on financing that goes "far beyond the funds provided by the Recovery Act in a time of continuing federal and state deficits."

Another challenge for some projects will be meeting the 2017 deadline to spend Recovery Act funds, the GAO said. The capacity to manufacture passenger rail cars and other high-speed equipment exists in the U.S. But it may take years to design and test new rail cars that meet U.S. crashworthiness standards, which are different than much of the rest of the world.

Health information technology

The claim: Stimulus spending is "a significant boost" to goals of converting to electronic health records, computerized prescriptions and remote treatment of patients in hard-to-reach locations.

The facts: The effort to get doctors' offices and hospitals using electronic medical records is in its earliest stages. Economic dividends from greater efficiency and fewer costly medical mistakes could be years away.

And there's plenty of potential for glitches. People involved with the issue give the administration high marks for trying, but many do not expect Obama's goal of getting all of America's medical records computerized within five years to be met.

For one thing, about 90 percent of roughly $20 billion the stimulus legislation allocated for this purpose has yet to be spent.

Most of the stimulus money is to help doctors and hospitals defray the cost of installing computer systems, but the Health and Human Services Department only recently spelled out the capabilities that those systems will have to have in order to qualify for federal money. No systems have yet been certified as meeting the required capabilities.

Electric vehicles

The claim: The stimulus has helped produce "significant steps toward affordable electric cars that can drive 300 miles on a single charge, powered by $10 of clean electricity instead of $50 dollars of oil. Ultimately this means consumers may have the choice among a range of vehicles from a combustion vehicle with over 50 miles per gallon or an electric-drive vehicle for the same price."

The facts: While strides are being made, this vision of the future rests on assumptions that many regard as overly optimistic. Even a White House task force on the auto industry's recovery said while General Motors' extended-range plug-in hybrid, the Volt, "holds promise, it will likely be too expensive to be commercially successful in the short term." At $41,000, the Volt is about twice the price of a conventional midsize car. The price of electric cars will drop, but automakers are years from being able to sell them at the same price as cars with internal combustion engines.

Another hurdle is fuel prices, which are relatively low and provide little incentive to consumers to spend thousands of dollars extra for a hybrid or even more for a plug-in car; it would take years for the fuel savings to outweigh the higher price.

And there are questions about whether the large lithium ion batteries needed for electric cars are durable, safe and affordable enough for widespread use.

The Last Refuge of the Liberal

Liberalism under siege is an ugly sight indeed. Just yesterday it was all hope and change and returning power to the people. But the people have proved so disappointing. Their recalcitrance has, in only 19 months, turned the predicted 40-year liberal ascendancy (James Carville) into a full retreat. Ah, the people, the little people, the small-town people, the "bitter" people, as Barack Obama in an unguarded moment once memorably called them, clinging "to guns or religion or" -- this part is less remembered -- "antipathy toward people who aren't like them."

That's a polite way of saying: clinging to bigotry. And promiscuous charges of bigotry are precisely how our current rulers and their vast media auxiliary react to an obstreperous citizenry that insists on incorrect thinking.

-- Resistance to the vast expansion of government power, intrusiveness and debt, as represented by the tea party movement? Why, racist resentment toward a black president.

-- Disgust and alarm with the federal government's unwillingness to curb illegal immigration, as crystallized in the Arizona law? Nativism.

-- Opposition to the most radical redefinition of marriage in human history, as expressed in Proposition 8 in California? Homophobia.

-- Opposition to a 15-story Islamic center and mosque near Ground Zero? Islamophobia.

Now we know why the country has become "ungovernable," last year's excuse for the Democrats' failure of governance: Who can possibly govern a nation of racist, nativist, homophobic Islamophobes?

Note what connects these issues. In every one, liberals have lost the argument in the court of public opinion. Majorities -- often lopsided majorities -- oppose President Obama's social-democratic agenda (e.g., the stimulus, Obamacare), support the Arizona law, oppose gay marriage and reject a Ground Zero mosque.

What's a liberal to do? Pull out the bigotry charge, the trump that pre-empts debate and gives no credit to the seriousness and substance of the contrary argument. The most venerable of these trumps is, of course, the race card. When the tea party arose, a spontaneous, leaderless and perfectly natural (and traditionally American) reaction to the vast expansion of government intrinsic to the president's proudly proclaimed transformational agenda, the liberal commentariat cast it as a mob of angry white yahoos disguising their antipathy to a black president by cleverly speaking in economic terms.

Then came Arizona and SB 1070. It seems impossible for the left to believe that people of good will could hold that: (a) illegal immigration should be illegal, (b) the federal government should not hold border enforcement hostage to comprehensive reform, i.e., amnesty, (c) every country has the right to determine the composition of its immigrant population.

As for Proposition 8, is it so hard to see why people might believe that a single judge overturning the will of 7 million voters is an affront to democracy? And that seeing merit in retaining the structure of the most ancient and fundamental of all social institutions is something other than an alleged hatred of gays -- particularly since the opposite-gender requirement has characterized virtually every society in all the millennia until just a few years ago?

And now the Ground Zero mosque. The intelligentsia is near unanimous that the only possible grounds for opposition is bigotry toward Muslims. This smug attribution of bigotry to two-thirds of the population hinges on the insistence on a complete lack of connection between Islam and radical Islam, a proposition that dovetails perfectly with the Obama administration's pretense that we are at war with nothing more than "violent extremists" of inscrutable motive and indiscernible belief. Those who reject this as both ridiculous and politically correct (an admitted redundancy) are declared Islamophobes, the ad hominem du jour.

It is a measure of the corruption of liberal thought and the collapse of its self-confidence that, finding itself so widely repudiated, it resorts reflexively to the cheapest race-baiting (in a colorful variety of forms). Indeed, how can one reason with a nation of pitchfork-wielding mobs brimming with "antipathy toward people who aren't like them" -- blacks, Hispanics, gays and Muslims -- a nation that is, as Michelle Obama once put it succinctly, "just downright mean"?

The Democrats are going to get beaten badly in November. Not just because the economy is ailing. And not just because Obama overread his mandate in governing too far left. But because a comeuppance is due the arrogant elites whose undisguised contempt for the great unwashed prevents them from conceding a modicum of serious thought to those who dare oppose them.

Commodus Castigates a Centurion

Emperor Lucius Aurelius Commodus, son of Marcus Aurielus, the "last of five good emperors," ruled Rome from AD 177 to AD 192. History tells us that Commodus "proved to be a self-indulgent, disconnected leader." In fact, Commodus' "accession to power ended a spell of 80 years in Roman history which had brought men to the throne by merit rather than birth."

Supposedly, Imperator Caesar Lucius Aurelius Commodus Augustus was filled with "cruelty, vanity, power and fear," which "formed into a terrifyingly dangerous mix of bloodlust, suspicion and megalomania."

Thousands of years have passed and presently America is being ruled by Barack Obama. Obama also maneuvers his way through the political empire like a Roman Emperor whose objective is retention of power by way of wile, stealth, and intimidation.

Defy or disparage Obama, and a suspicious president adopts dealing with the offender as his top priority and behaves like an obsessed Commodus, pursuing enemies who are armed only with blunted weapons. In fact, Obama's ancient predecessor, Commodus "is said to have feigned a plot against his own life, in order that he might have an excuse for putting many to death."

Take for example Arizona daring to enact immigration law as a means of self-preservation. Obama views the state under siege, defending itself from mutiny against the empire, and intends to drag the Grand Canyon state into the coliseum to spank the living daylights out of defiant politicians and policy.

Top commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal also did the inexcusable. In a Rolling Stone article entitled "The Runaway General," McChrystal candidly described an encounter with Commodus-in-Chief.

McChrystal thought Obama looked "uncomfortable and intimidated" by the roomful of military brass. Their first one-on-one meeting took place in the Oval Office four months later, after McChrystal got the Afghanistan job, and it didn't go much better. "It was a 10-minute photo op," says an adviser to McChrystal. "Obama clearly didn't know anything about him, who he was. Here's the guy who's going to run his [expletive] war, but he didn't seem very engaged. The Boss was pretty disappointed."

A highly trained general at the pinnacle of his military career certainly has experience enough to recognize "unpreparedness" when he sees it. Yet, the observant General found that one dare not defy Obama, because harsh recompense can befall the mighty at the hand of the weak. Remember, "Whosoever ridiculed [Commodus] he cast to the wild beasts."

The President, like a power-hungry Roman emperor, seems driven by insecurity and exhibits disdain for disagreement. McChrystal's comments were defined as flippant insubordination by the "furious" Obama. Thus, America's highest-ranking legatewas summoned from the heat of battle for a face-to-face reproof in Washington, D.C.

If McChrystal thought fighting the Taliban was rough, the Afghan war is nothing compared to being dressed down by a Chicago community organizer whom McChrystal all but called a "wimp in the White House."

Although imprudent, General McChrystal and his aides spoke with unadulterated veracity about Obama's inexperience and ineptness. Obama chastising a "Spartan commander" of McChrystal's caliber can be likened to a Roman emperor throwing an unarmed centurion to the lions.

Though reported as a resignation, truth is President Barack Obama "ousted Gen. Stanley McChrystal" as the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan for contemptuous remarks about administration officials, which Obama contends "undermined civilian control of the military and eroded trust on the president's war team."

Ironically, Obama's irresponsible international diplomacy and "poor judgment" has compromised the safety of our troops numerous times. For an amateur like Barack to intimate that McChrystal's personal statement compromises the safety of the military in Afghanistan encapsulates the paranoid character of a current-day Commodus.

The comparisons between Barack Obama and Commodus are unsettling. According to historical texts, Commodus was a weak, inexperienced leader who came to power with great pomp and ceremony and fancied himself the god Hercules. Yet, Commodus' reign is credited with "ending years of Roman stability and prosperity."

Like Barack Obama, Commodus entered Rome "in a triumphal procession, receiving a hero's welcome." To the young, "Commodus [was] an icon of new, happier days to come; his arrival sparked the highest hopes in the Roman people."

In the name of peace, Commodus relinquished military advances the Roman Empire celebrated under Marcus Aurelius. Militarily, the Roman Emperor "surrendered all his father had achieved" and retreated from "direly contested territories." Emperor Commodus' retreat was viewed as "an utter betrayal of everything the beloved Marcus Aurelius had stood for."

Similar retreats from hard-won military advances may be at the crux of General McChrystal's beef with Obama.

Like Obama, Commodus was "loved by the lower classes" because "generosity was indeed a part of his imperial program...the emperor obtained some of this funding by taxing members of the senatorial class." The Emperor "nearly bankrupted the imperial treasury with his expensive lifestyle," and then "replenished it by accusing senators of treason and having their property seized."

Can anybody say $13 trillion dollar deficit, "BP shakedown," or tax the rich and "redistribute the wealth?"

Commodus identified with Roman gladiators who were drawn from the dregs of society. Commodus "played gladiator" while "the empire itself faced hard times." Two thousand years later, Obama plays golf while American experience hard times.

According to Roman historian Herodian (1.15-17), "In his gladiatorial combats, [Commodus] defeated his opponents with ease, and he did no more than wound them, since they all submitted to him only because they knew he was the emperor, not because he was truly a gladiator."

Even today Emperor Obama nibbles clusters of grapes while terrorists sneak over the border, the economy falters, Ahmedinejad is in the process of starting a nuclear friction fire by rubbing a bomb between Iran's Israel-hating hands, and oil hemorrhages like a severed artery into the Gulf of Mexico, smothering the American coastline.

At a sensitive time in the Afghan conflict, retribution for impertinence toward the Imperious One takes precedence over both strategy and security. General Stanley McChrystal's resignation is merely additional collateral damage delivered by a disgraceful administration that makes sport of "degrad[ing] the most honorable either by insulting them directly or giving them offices far below their deserts."

"Commodus' reign was filled with bad decisions, causing the people of Rome to suffer." Truth be known, Obama is nothing more than a high-handed modern-day Commodus whose disproportionate focus is dealing harshly with critics while Rome burns.

Judicial Watch Announces List of Washington's "Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians" for 2009

Judicial Watch, the public interest group that investigates and prosecutes government corruption, today released its 2009 list of Washington's "Ten Most Wanted Corrupt Politicians." The list, in alphabetical order, includes:

Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT): This marks two years in a row for Senator Dodd, who made the 2008 "Ten Most Corrupt" list for his corrupt relationship with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and for accepting preferential treatment and loan terms from Countrywide Financial, a scandal which still dogs him. In 2009, the scandals kept coming for the Connecticut Democrat. In 2009, Judicial Watch filed aSenate ethics complaint against Dodd for undervaluing a property he owns in Ireland on his Senate Financial Disclosure forms. Judicial Watch's complaint forced Dodd to amend the forms. However, press reports suggest the property to this day remains undervalued. Judicial Watch also alleges in the complaint that Dodd obtained a sweetheart deal for the property in exchange for his assistance in obtaining a presidential pardon (during the Clinton administration) and other favors for a long-time friend and business associate. The false financial disclosure forms were part of the cover-up. Dodd remains the head the Senate Banking Committee.

Senator John Ensign (R-NV): A number of scandals popped up in 2009 involving public officials who conducted illicit affairs, and then attempted to cover them up with hush payments and favors, an obvious abuse of power. The year's worst offender might just be Nevada Republican Senator John Ensign. Ensign admitted in June to an extramarital affair with the wife of one of his staff members, who then allegedly obtained special favors from the Nevada Republican in exchange for his silence. According to The New York Times: "The Justice Department and the Senate Ethics Committee are expected to conduct preliminary inquiries into whether Senator John Ensign violated federal law or ethics rules as part of an effort to conceal an affair with the wife of an aide…" The former staffer, Douglas Hampton, began to lobby Mr. Ensign's office immediately upon leaving his congressional job, despite the fact that he was subject to a one-year lobbying ban. Ensign seems to have ignored the law and allowed Hampton lobbying access to his office as a payment for his silence about the affair. (These are potentially criminal offenses.) It looks as if Ensign misused his public office (and taxpayer resources) to cover up his sexual shenanigans.

Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA): Judicial Watch is investigating a $12 million TARP cash injection provided to the Boston-based OneUnited Bank at the urging of Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank. As reported in the January 22, 2009, edition of the Wall Street Journal, the Treasury Department indicated it would only provide funds to healthy banks to jump-start lending. Not only was OneUnited Bank in massive financial turmoil, but it was also "under attack from its regulators for allegations of poor lending practices and executive-pay abuses, including owning a Porsche for its executives' use." Rep. Frank admitted he spoke to a "federal regulator," and Treasury granted the funds. (The bank continues to flounder despite Frank's intervention for federal dollars.) Moreover, Judicial Watch uncovered documents in 2009 that showed that members of Congress for years were aware that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were playing fast and loose with accounting issues, risk assessment issues and executive compensation issues, even as liberals led by Rep. Frank continued to block attempts to rein in the two Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs). For example, during a hearing on September 10, 2003, before the House Committee on Financial Services considering a Bush administration proposal to further regulate Fannie and Freddie, Rep. Frank stated: "I want to begin by saying that I am glad to consider the legislation, but I do not think we are facing any kind of a crisis. That is, in my view, the two Government Sponsored Enterprises we are talking about here, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, are not in a crisis. We have recently had an accounting problem with Freddie Mac that has led to people being dismissed, as appears to be appropriate. I do not think at this point there is a problem with a threat to the Treasury." Frank received $42,350 in campaign contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac between 1989 and 2008. Frank also engaged in a relationship with a Fannie Mae Executive while serving on the House Banking Committee, which has jurisdiction over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Secretary of Treasury Timothy Geithner: In 2009, Obama Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner admitted that he failed to pay $34,000 in Social Security and Medicare taxes from 2001-2004 on his lucrative salary at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), an organization with 185 member countries that oversees the global financial system. (Did we mention Geithner now runs the IRS?) It wasn't until President Obama tapped Geithner to head the Treasury Department that he paid back most of the money, although the IRS kindly waived the hefty penalties. In March 2009, Geithner also came under fire for his handling of the AIG bonus scandal, where the company used $165 million of its bailout funds to pay out executive bonuses, resulting in a massive public backlash. Of course as head of the New York Federal Reserve, Geithner helped craft the AIG deal in September 2008. However, when the AIG scandal broke, Geithner claimed he knew nothing of the bonuses until March 10, 2009. The timing is important.According to CNN: "Although Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told congressional leaders on Tuesday that he learned of AIG's impending $160 million bonus payments to members of its troubled financial-products unit on March 10, sources tell TIME that the New York Federal Reserve informed Treasury staff that the payments were imminent on Feb. 28. That is ten days before Treasury staffers say they first learned 'full details' of the bonus plan, and three days before the [Obama] Administration launched a new $30 billion infusion of cash for AIG." Throw in another embarrassing disclosure in 2009 that Geithner employed "household help" ineligible to work in the United States, and it becomes clear why the Treasury Secretary has earned a spot on the "Ten Most Corrupt Politicians in Washington" list.

Attorney General Eric Holder: Tim Geithner can be sure he won't be hounded about his tax-dodging by his colleague Eric Holder, US Attorney General. Judicial Watch strongly opposed Holder because of his terrible ethics record, which includes: obstructing an FBI investigation of the theft of nuclear secrets from Los Alamos Nuclear Laboratory; rejecting multiple requests for an independent counsel to investigate alleged fundraising abuses by then-Vice President Al Gore in the Clinton White House; undermining the criminal investigation of President Clinton by Kenneth Starr in the midst of the Lewinsky investigation; and planning the violent raid to seize then-six-year-old Elian Gonzalez at gunpoint in order to return him to Castro's Cuba. Moreover, there is his soft record on terrorism. Holder bypassed Justice Department procedures to push through Bill Clinton's scandalous presidential pardons and commutations, including for 16 members of FALN, a violent Puerto Rican terrorist group that orchestrated approximately 120 bombings in the United States, killing at least six people and permanently maiming dozens of others, including law enforcement officers. His record in the current administration is no better. As he did during the Clinton administration, Holder continues to ignore serious incidents of corruption that could impact his political bosses at the White House. For example, Holder has refused to investigate charges that the Obama political machine traded VIP access to the White House in exchange for campaign contributions – a scheme eerily similar to one hatched by Holder's former boss, Bill Clinton in the 1990s. The Holder Justice Department also came under fire for dropping a voter intimidation case against the New Black Panther Party. On Election Day 2008, Black Panthers dressed in paramilitary garb threatened voters as they approached polling stations. Holder has also failed to initiate a comprehensive Justice investigation of the notorious organization ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now), which is closely tied to President Obama. There were allegedly more than 400,000 fraudulent ACORN voter registrations in the 2008 campaign. And then there were the journalist videos catching ACORN Housing workers advising undercover reporters on how to evade tax, immigration, and child prostitution laws. Holder's controversial decisions on new rights for terrorists and his attacks on previous efforts to combat terrorism remind many of the fact that his former law firm has provided and continues to provide pro bono representation to terrorists at Guantanamo Bay. Holder's politicization of the Justice Department makes one long for the days of Alberto Gonzales.

Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-IL)/ Senator Roland Burris (D-IL): One of the most serious scandals of 2009 involved a scheme by former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich to sell President Obama's then-vacant Senate seat to the highest bidder. Two men caught smack dab in the middle of the scandal: Senator Roland Burris, who ultimately got the job, and Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. According to the Chicago Sun-Times, emissaries for Jesse Jackson Jr., named "Senate Candidate A" in the Blagojevich indictment, reportedly offered $1.5 million to Blagojevich during a fundraiser if he named Jackson Jr. to Obama's seat. Three days later federal authorities arrested Blagojevich. Burris, for his part, apparently lied about his contacts with Blagojevich, who was arrested in December 2008 for trying to sell Obama's Senate seat. According to Reuters: "Roland Burris came under fresh scrutiny…after disclosing he tried to raise money for the disgraced former Illinois governor who named him to the U.S. Senate seat once held by President Barack Obama…In the latest of those admissions, Burris said he looked into mounting a fundraiser for Rod Blagojevich -- later charged with trying to sell Obama's Senate seat -- at the same time he was expressing interest to the then-governor's aides about his desire to be appointed." Burris changed his story five times regarding his contacts with Blagojevich prior to the Illinois governor appointing him to the U.S. Senate. Three of those changing explanations came under oath.

President Barack Obama: During his presidential campaign, President Obama promised to run an ethical and transparent administration. However, in his first year in office, the President has delivered corruption and secrecy, bringing Chicago-style political corruption to the White House. Consider just a few Obama administration "lowlights" from year one: Even before President Obama was sworn into office, he was interviewed by the FBI for a criminal investigation of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich's scheme to sell the President's former Senate seat to the highest bidder. (Obama's Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and slumlord Valerie Jarrett, both from Chicago, are also tangled up in the Blagojevich scandal.) Moreover, the Obama administration made the startling claim that the Privacy Act does not apply to the White House. The Obama White House believes it can violate the privacy rights of American citizens without any legal consequences or accountability. President Obama boldly proclaimed that "transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency," but his administration is addicted to secrecy, stonewalling far too many of Judicial Watch's Freedom of Information Act requestsand is refusing to make public White House visitor logs as federal law requires. The Obama administration turned the National Endowment of the Arts (as well as the agency that runs the AmeriCorps program) into propaganda machines, using tax dollars to persuade "artists" to promote the Obama agenda. According to documents uncovered by Judicial Watch, the idea emerged as a direct result of the Obama campaign and enjoyed White House approval and participation. President Obama has installed a record number of "czars" in positions of power. Too many of these individuals are leftist radicals who answer to no one but the president. And too many of the czars are not subject to Senate confirmation (which raises serious constitutional questions). Under the President's bailout schemes, the federal government continues to appropriate or control — through fiat and threats — large sectors of the private economy, prompting conservative columnist George Will to write: "The administration's central activity — the political allocation of wealth and opportunity — is not merely susceptible to corruption, it is corruption." Government-run healthcare and car companies, White House coercion, uninvestigated ACORN corruption, debasing his office to help Chicago cronies, attacks on conservative media and the private sector, unprecedented and dangerous new rights for terrorists, perks for campaign donors — this is Obama's "ethics" record — and we haven't even gotten through the first year of his presidency.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA): At the heart of the corruption problem in Washington is a sense of entitlement. Politicians believe laws and rules (even the U.S. Constitution) apply to the rest of us but not to them. Case in point: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and her excessive and boorish demands for military travel. Judicial Watch obtained documents from the Pentagon in 2009 that suggest Pelosi has been treating the Air Force like her own personal airline. These documents, obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, include internal Pentagon email correspondence detailing attempts by Pentagon staff to accommodate Pelosi's numerous requests for military escorts and military aircraft as well as the speaker's 11th hour cancellations and changes. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi also came under fire in April 2009, when she claimed she was never briefed about the CIA's use of the waterboarding technique during terrorism investigations. The CIA produced a report documenting a briefing with Pelosi on September 4, 2002, that suggests otherwise. Judicial Watch also obtained documents, including aCIA Inspector General report, which further confirmed that Congress was fully briefed on the enhanced interrogation techniques. Aside from her own personal transgressions, Nancy Pelosi has ignored serious incidents of corruption within her own party, including many of the individuals on this list. (See Rangel, Murtha, Jesse Jackson, Jr., etc.)

Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) and the rest of the PMA Seven: Rep. John Murtha made headlines in 2009 for all the wrong reasons. The Pennsylvania congressman is under federal investigation for his corrupt relationship with the now-defunct defense lobbyist PMA Group. PMA, founded by a former Murtha associate, has been the congressman's largest campaign contributor. Since 2002, Murtha has raised $1.7 million from PMA and its clients. And what did PMA and its clients receive from Murtha in return for their generosity? Earmarks -- tens of millions of dollars in earmarks. In fact, even with all of the attention surrounding his alleged influence peddling, Murtha kept at it. Following an FBI raid of PMA's offices earlier in 2009, Murtha continued to seek congressional earmarks for PMA clients, while also hitting them up for campaign contributions. According to The Hill, in April, "Murtha reported receiving contributions from three former PMA clients for whom he requested earmarks in the pending appropriations bills." When it comes to the PMA scandal, Murtha is not alone. As many as six other Members of Congress are currently under scrutiny according to The Washington Post. They include: Peter J. Visclosky (D-IN.), James P. Moran Jr. (D-VA), Norm Dicks (D-WA.), Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), C.W. Bill Young (R-FL.) and Todd Tiahrt (R-KS.). Of course rather than investigate this serious scandal, according to Roll Call House Democrats circled the wagons, "cobbling together a defense to offer political cover to their rank and file." The Washington Post also reported in 2009 that Murtha's nephew received $4 million in Defense Departmentno-bid contracts: "Newly obtained documents…show Robert Murtha mentioning his influential family connection as leverage in his business dealings and holding unusual power with the military."

Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY): Rangel, the man in charge of writing tax policy for the entire country, has yet to adequately explain how he could possibly "forget" to pay taxes on $75,000 in rental income he earned from his off-shore rental property. He also faces allegations that he improperly used his influence to maintain ownership of highly coveted rent-controlled apartments in Harlem, and misused his congressional office to fundraise for his private Rangel Center by preserving a tax loophole for an oil drilling company in exchange for funding. On top of all that, Rangel recently amended his financial disclosure reports, which doubled his reported wealth. (He somehow "forgot" about $1 million in assets.) And what did he do when the House Ethics Committee started looking into all of this? He apparently resorted to making "campaign contributions" to dig his way out of trouble. According toWCBS TV, a New York CBS affiliate: "The reigning member of Congress' top tax committee is apparently 'wrangling' other politicos to get him out of his own financial and tax troubles...Since ethics probes began last year the 79-year-old congressman has given campaign donations to 119 members of Congress, including three of the five Democrats on the House Ethics Committee who are charged with investigating him." Charlie Rangel should not be allowed to remain in Congress, let alone serve as Chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, and he knows it. That's why he felt the need to disburse campaign contributions to Ethics Committee members and other congressional colleagues.

"A lot of businesses were hit hard during this downturn, but they're starting to hire again. Workers who were laid off, they're starting to get their jobs back. Companies that were almost forced to close their doors are making plans to expand and invest in new equipment. And this progress is reflected in the monthly jobs reports that we get each month. We received one today. In May, the economy added 431,000 jobs. (Applause.)" President Obama, June 4, 2010.

Veil of secrecy shrouding dead CIA officer lifted

LaBonte's family had promised him they wouldn't talk about his work. They kept that pledge as they mourned in private after he died along with six other CIA employees and a Jordanian intelligence officer in the suicide bombing at a U.S. base in Afghanistan in late December.

Even now, months after his burial, they won't detail the dangerous work he did for the agency. "We made that promise to him," said LaBonte's parents, David and Camille.

But his family did decide over Memorial Day to acknowledge that he was among the bombing victims _ and they decided to tell the world a bit about the man behind the name.

All but two of the CIA employees killed in the blast had previously been identified publicly. The seventh victim, the agency's chief of base, a 45-year-old mother of three and an al-Qaida expert, remains anonymous.

Indeed, anonymity is part of the trade-off for a career in intelligence. CIA families have grieved in silence for decades.

"It's hard to understand," said Ted Gup, author of "The Book of Honor: The Secret Lives and Deaths of CIA Operatives." "It's hard for our entire culture to grasp the nature of this sacrifice. We live in a culture of celebrity where what is not recognized doesn't exist."

Spies, he added, "come out of a culture where what is recognized ceases to exist. The light is lethal."

The CIA won't discuss LaBonte, but his parents and wife agreed to shed some light about his death. And over this past Memorial Day weekend, a historic B-17 plane dropped flowers over the Statue of Liberty in a tribute to the seven slain Americans.

LaBonte was 35 years old when he died, ending a career that included service in the military and a series of law enforcement jobs.

"He was a pretty talented guy," said his father, who described the son as "intelligent, complex and an incredible athlete."

LaBonte grew up in Connecticut. He played baseball and football at Brookfield High School. He turned down a shot at professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians when he graduated from high school in 1992 and opted for the Army, said his father, a former Navy SEAL.

LaBonte earned the celebrated black and yellow Ranger patch and was assigned to First Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, one of the toughest units.

In 1999, LaBonte met his wife _ Racheal _ on a blind date to a Ranger ball in Savannah, Ga., where he was stationed. The following year, they married and he left the Army. But after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, LaBonte wanted to get back into the fight.

"He was hellbent on making this 9/11 thing right," his father said. "That really affected him badly."

LaBonte decided not to re-enlist in the Army, choosing to pursue an education and a career in law enforcement. He graduated from Columbia College of Missouri and received a master's degree in May 2006 from Boston University, where he studied criminal justice.

Along the way, he had worked as a police officer in Libertyville, Ill., and as a U.S. marshal before joining the FBI. The family said LaBonte won a leadership and shooting award at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Va., then landed in the FBI's New York field office.

The CIA recruited him, and he resigned from the FBI in late 2006, moving with his wife to the Washington, D.C., area. His father had reservations about the CIA, but his son had always steered his own course.

He was a "man determined to be a part of the solution to the unrest in our world," his mother said.

His parents declined to discuss what he did for the agency. But the elder LaBonte said his son had served in Iraq, Afghanistan and Amman, Jordan, his last posting before he died in Afghanistan. Father and son talked about the perils of his job.

"I don't think he feared death," David LaBonte said. "He faced it."

"He was a Spartan," his wife said. "He had to do these things. I respected him and honored him."

Darren LaBonte's parents, who live Arnold, Md., said they had planned a Christmas trip to Italy about the time of the Khost bombing. Their son planned to meet them, along with his wife and daughter Raina, who turns 3 in November. LaBonte's younger brother also was coming.

On Dec. 17, LaBonte left for Afghanistan, leaving his wife and daughter in Amman.

"He was anxious but excited about the mission," Racheal LaBonte said.

His trip to Italy was suddenly delayed. The CIA believed it was on the verge of a major breakthrough in the hunt to kill Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaida's No. 2. The Jordanians had a man on the inside who said he had information about the terrorist.

On the night of Dec. 30, while staying in a villa in Tuscany _ the day before LaBonte was supposed to arrive in Italy _ his wife took a phone call: Her husband was dead.

"You hear it, but you don't comprehend it," she said. "They are words you never want to hear in your entire life."

In a deadly double-cross, five CIA officers, two security contractors and a Jordanian intelligence officer were killed at the remote base in Khost. Six other CIA officers were wounded.

David LaBonte said the U.S. government "took us by the hand" and helped the grieving family make its way back to the U.S. He praised CIA Director Leon Panetta, who made sure his son was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. The funeral was Feb. 1. The chief of base was also laid to rest at Arlington.

"There was some question about Darren being buried in Arlington," the father said. "Within days, Panetta took care of this, which was a big thing for us. I thought he would be standoffish. He has been magnificent with our family. He has been caring and sincere, not an aloof politician."

Camille LaBonte said the CIA has not forgotten her son or what he did for the country.

"They have not left us," she said. "They can't bring our people back, but they do try to honor them in many different ways."

In March, the family attended a memorial service in Amman, where Robert Beecroft, the U.S. ambassador, praised the fallen CIA officer.

"Most of the people in the CIA are just like the rest of us but they have dangerous jobs," said Racheal LaBonte. "He loved his family. He loved his job. It's not about killing people. It's about saving people."

We know Dick Lamm as the former Governor of Colorado. In that context
his thoughts are particularly poignant. Last week there was an
immigration overpopulation conference in Washington , DC , filled to
capacity by many of America 's finest minds and leaders. A brilliant
college professor by the name of Victor Hansen Davis talked about his
latest book, 'Mexifornia,' explaining how immigration - both legal and
illegal was destroying the entire state of California . He said it would
march across the country until it destroyed all vestiges of The American
Dream.

Moments later, former Colorado Governor Richard D. Lamm stood up and
gave a stunning speech on how to destroy America

The audience sat spellbound as he described eight methods for the
destruction of the United States . He said, 'If you believe that
America is too smug, too self-satisfied, too rich, then let's destroy
America . It is not that hard to do. No nation in history has survived
the ravages of time. Arnold Toynbee observed that all great
civilizations rise and fall and that 'An autopsy of history would show
that all great nations commit suicide.''

'Here is how they do it,' Lamm said:

'First, to destroy America , turn America into a bilingual or
multi-lingual and bicultural country... History shows that no nation
can survive the tension, conflict, and antagonism of two or more
competing languages and cultures. It is a blessing for an individual to
be bilingual; however, it is a curse for a society to be bilingual. The
historical scholar, Seymour Lipset, put it this way: 'The histories of
bilingual and bicultural societies that do not assimilate are histories
of turmoil, tension, and tragedy.' Canada , Belgium , Malaysia , and
Lebanon all face crises of national existence in which minorities press
for autonomy , if not independence. Pakistan and Cyprus have divided.
Nigeria suppressed an ethnic rebellion. France faces difficulties with
Basques, Bretons, Corsicans and Muslims.'

Lamm went on:

'Second, to destroy America , invent 'multiculturalism' and encourage
immigrants to maintain their culture. Make it an article of belief that
all cultures are equal; that there are no=2 0cultural differences. Make
it an article of faith that the Black and Hispanic dropout rates are due
solely to prejudice and discrimination by the majority. Every other
explanation is out of bounds.

'Third, we could make the United States an 'Hispanic Quebec ' without
much effort. The key is to celebrate diversity rather than unity. As
Benjamin Schwarz said in the Atlantic Monthly recently: 'The apparent
success of our own multi-ethnic and multicultural experiment might have
been achieved not by tolerance but by hegemony. Without the dominance
that once dictated ethnocentricy and what it meant to be an American, we
are left with only tolerance and pluralism to hold us together.' Lamm
said, 'I would encourage all immigrants to keep their own language and
culture. I would replace the melting pot metaphor with the salad bowl
metaphor. It is important to ensure that we have various cultural
subgroups living in America enforcing their differences rather than as
Americans, emphasizing their similarities.'

'Fourth, I would make our fastest growing demographic group the least
educated. I would add a second underclass, unassimilated, undereducated,
and antagonistic to our population. I would have this second underclass
have a 50% dropout rate from high school.'

'My fifth point for destroying America would be to get big foundations
and business to give these efforts lots of money. I would invest in
ethnic identity, and I would establish the cult of 'Victimology.' I
would get all minorities to think that their lack of success was the
fault of the majority. I would start a grievance industry blaming all
minority failure on the majority.'

'My sixth plan for America 's downfall would include dual citizenship,
and promote divided loyalties. I would celebrate diversity over unity. I
would stress differences rather than similarities. Diverse people
worldwide are mostly engaged in hating each other - that is, when they
are not killing each other. A diverse, peaceful, or stable society is
against most historical precept. People undervalue the unity it takes to
keep a nation together. Look at the ancient Greeks. The Greeks believed
that they belonged to the same race; they possessed a common language
and literature; and they worshipped the same gods. All Greece took part
in the Olympic games.. A common enemy, Persia , threatened their liberty.
Yet all these bonds were not strong enough to overcome two factors:
local patriotism and geographical conditions that nurtured political
divisions. Greece fell. 'E. Pluribus Unum' -- From many, one. In that
historical reality, if we put the emphasis on the 'pluribus' instead of
the 'Unum,' we will 'Balkanize' America as surely as Kosovo.'

'Next to last, I would place all subjects off limits. Make it taboo to
talk about anything against the cult of 'diversity.' I would find a word
similar to 'heretic' in the 16th century - that stopped discussion and
paralyzed thinking. Words like 'racist' or 'xenophobe' halt discussion
and debate. Having made America a bilingual/bicultural country, having
established multi-cultum, having the large foundations fund the doctrine
of 'Victimology,' I would next make it impossible to enforce our
immigration laws. I would develop a mantra: That because immigration has
been good for America , it must always be good. I would make every
individual immigrant symmetric and ignore the cumulative impact of
millions of them.'

In the last minute of his speech, Governor Lamm wiped his brow. Profound
silence followed. Finally he said, 'Lastly, I would censor Victor Hanson
Davis 's book 'Mexifornia.' His book is dangerous. It exposes the plan to
destroy America .. If you feel America deserves to be destroyed, don't
read that book.'

There was no applause. A chilling fear quietly rose like an ominous
cloud above every attendee at the conference. Every American in that
room knew that everything Lamm enumerated was proceeding methodically,
quietly, darkly, yet pervasively across the United States today.
Discussion is being suppressed. Over 100 languages are ripping the
foundation of our educational system and national cohesiveness. Even
barbaric cultures that practice female genital mutilation are growing as
we celebrate 'diversity.' American jobs are vanishing into the Third
World as corporations create a Third World in America Take note of
California and other states. Todate, ten million illegal aliens and
growing fast. It is reminiscent of George Orwell's book '1984.' In that
story, three slogans are engraved in the Ministry of Truth building:
'War is peace,' 'Freedom is slavery,' and 'Ignorance is strength.'

We are in the grips of an evil system. Big government social planners claim their programs do good but they do more harm than good. In fact they do horrible things. A wise man said, “The worst thing that can befall you is to have nothing to do.” Is it too much to ask the left to absorb some simple truths about human behavior? Do liberals know Proverbs? e.g. “Idleness is the devil’s workshop.” Bad behavior emanates from boredom. Think of its opposite – stimulation. People will do bad things to escape boredom. That’s not all, runaway social sympathy obscures the crucial fact that human beings improve themselves through struggle. Adversity carries the seeds of wisdom and growth. The left is engineering a nation of wimps and ne’er-do-wells, who run to the government with every hangnail and eventually become permanent wards of the state. Taxpayers are creating and subsidizing villains who can rob and maim them. This is the Achilles heel of liberalism. These are the facts that should be relentlessly publicized. To defeat the left attack their weakest point. Shine the spotlight on their atrocious handiwork. They can never defend what they have done. In it lies the seeds of their undoing. There’s no other way to put it. The Greek riots were no more than a temper tantrum thrown by overgrown government employees. Previously, Greek government employees could retire with a full pension (80% of their salary) after 35 years of work. Theoretically, a worker starting at 18 could retire at 53 with full benefits. With reduced benefits, an even earlier retirement was possible. With the overly plush benefits disappearing, the workers are naturally angry. The problem isn’t that the Greek government is too cruel but rather that Greek expectations are too high. But Greece isn’t our main concern. U.S. culture also has some problematic expectations of work and employment.

1. First, we all expect to live like kings, no matter what our profession. The subprime mortgage crisis was the result of systematic government interventions. However, it doesn’t explain why so many purchased a $300K home in the suburbs rather than a $150K home in the city. If most subprime buyers had financed homes in their price range with ARMs, many would likely still have their homes. We have a cultural problem of financially reaching beyond our means and future expected salaries.
2. To most Americans, the 40-hour work week is sacred. But with globalization, this simply cannot last forever. The history of the world is filled with 80-hour weeks in the factory and on the farm. For most of the world, this is still true. Having two jobs or attending school while working is considered a Herculean effort by most Americans. For the rest of the world, it sounds like a vacation. Sooner or later, globalization will force us back to reality.
3. The expectation of a great factory job straight out of high school is finally gone. There are only a few parts of the country with this mentality left, and they’re struggling. But there is a new, equally unrealistic idea left over from better times: get a college degree and receive a job afterward.
Many critics suggest fixing the college system. But it doesn’t need to be fixed. The students’ expectations need to adapt. That’s a much easier solution. These days, one goes to college to get a degree, which leads to a series of internships. These internships lead to a job. It’s a much more entrepreneurial approach to the job market. Employment is no longer handed to any bozo with a diploma. A recent graduate really has to make things happen for himself. Students operating under the old model fail in the job market.
4. The worship of the college degree hurts non-degree holders as well. Skilled labor is completely demeaned in the United States. Society encourages a young adult pursuing an art degree more than an electrician’s apprentice. Without a college degree, one is basically treated like a second-class citizen. Being a plumber, electrician, or mechanic are perfectly respectable jobs. Further, small business and entrepreneurship can create very rewarding careers. By pushing everyone to attend college, society demeans these important career paths without degrees.
Most Americans don’t realize that our value system is somewhat unique. For example, when I was entering college, I remember a conversation with my grandfather from Croatia. I explained to him my desire to study economics. His response was, “Economics? Why don’t you do something useful, like become an electrician?” What American parent would want their kid to be an electrician rather than a college graduate! And it’s not that Croatians don’t value education – they do. It’s just that becoming a good electrician is a respectable job over there.
5. The college degree is a double-edged sword. Once someone acquires a degree and can’t get a job, things get even worse. Students are often too embarrassed to change careers toward non-degree work. Shame and guilt prohibit former students from amending their college mistake. Instead of finding a new career, they dig the hole deeper by seeking a Masters or Ph.D. in useless majors. Even when they do accept non-degree jobs, the choices are very specific. Somehow, it’s socially acceptable for a former philosophy student to work at the coffee shop but not at a construction company for more money. It’s a very confusing social predicament.

"Papers please: Law makes it crime to be Illegal Immigrant."

This is how MSNBC summarized the new law in Arizona, designed to do something that our federal government will not: take illegal immigration seriously.

The idiocy of the not-so-subtle Nazi reference is exceeded only by the idea that doing something "illegal" should be anything other than a "crime."

But common sense didn't stop many from reacting as if Arizona's attempt to ask for identification would turn the Southwestern United States into the Fourth Reich.

Mexico even issued a warning to anyone daring to travel to Arizona, which would have been much more intimidating if it didn't sound so much like loving and sensible motherly advice: "It is important to act carefully and respect the local laws."

Isn't that good advice to anyone traveling anywhere?

Mexico's outrage rings particularly hollow considering Article 67 of its Population Law:

"Authorities, whether federal, state or municipal ... are required to demand that foreigners prove their legal presence in the country, before attending to any issues."

In addition, Amnesty International called the abuse of migrants in Mexico "a major human rights crisis."

Here, we occasionally ask for identification. In Mexico, an estimated six of 10 migrant women and girls are victims of sexual violence -- a crime often participated in by authorities themselves.

That's a real human rights crisis.

If the Arizona law is so controversial, the residents of Arizona don't seem to understand why. A Rasmussen poll found that 70 percent supported the basic concept of the law.

How did this happen?

Was it all those rich people? No, those earning less than $20,000 per year supported it 60-34 percent.

Was it all those old people? No, those between 18 and 29 years old supported it 72-28 percent.

Was it all those Republicans? No, Democrats supported the bill 51-43 percent.

Was it all those conservatives? No, liberals supported the bill 44-39 percent.

Was it all those white people? No, even the "other race" category, which includes mostly Hispanics, supported it 63-36 percent.

Either Arizona is filled with racists or they just know more about the law than those criticizing it.

President Obama said he believed it was a "poorly conceived law." He would have been right -- if anything like the law he described actually existed.

This is how he summarized his worry for "Hispanic Americans": "(If) you don't have your papers and you took your kid out to get ice cream, you're going to be harassed ... ."

Well, perhaps -- but not legally.

The law specifically prohibits such behavior. It applies so many circumstantial limitations that it's hard to imagine how systematic abuse is possible. Law enforcement will make a "reasonable attempt" to determine the immigration status of a person, "when practicable," if there is a "reasonable suspicion," if it doesn't "hinder or obstruct an investigation," or if he or she is already "arrested."

However, "race, color or national origin" cannot be the only reason someone is asked. Furthermore, any such interactions must be "permitted by the United States or Arizona constitution," must "be implemented in a manner consistent with federal laws regulating immigration," must protect "the civil rights of all persons" and the questioning must occur during "lawful contact."

What does "lawful contact" mean? According to the University of Missouri-Kansas City Law School professor who helped draft the law, it means "the officer is already engaged in some detention of an individual because he's violated some other law. ... The most likely context where this law would come into play is a traffic stop."

Arizona is currently in the midst of clarifying this even further, just to be completely clear.

So unless your mythical trip to the ice cream stand includes reckless driving or armed robbery, you're probably OK enjoying your mint chocolate chip waffle cone in peace.

The larger point, however, is that those who attack this law are making a very specific complaint about a very specific group of people. They claim the bill is ripe for abuse. But by whom? No critic is claiming that Republican politicians will start making citizen's arrests of passing Hispanics.

They are saying that police officers will abuse their powers to recklessly harass and detain Hispanic citizens for no reason. Why can we trust the police to make judgments on the use of lethal force but not to ask for identification when appropriate?

It's been my experience that police officers, along with members of the military, represent the finest among us. These are people who risk their lives every day to protect us, so why are we repaying them with accusations of widespread bigotry?

Do we really believe the everyday cop will be inextricably tempted to unfairly detain Hispanics, even when he will clearly have to break the law to do so? If you really believe that our men and women in uniform at the local precinct are the equivalent of German Nazis asking for "papers," then be honest about it.

Make that case to the American people.

I dare you.

Something I had not seen before...

Starting in 1941, an increasing number of British Airmen found themselves as the involuntary guests of the Third Reich, and the Crown was casting about for ways and means to facilitate their escape...

Now obviously, one of the most helpful aids to that end is a useful and accurate map, one showing
not only where stuff was, but also showing the locations of 'safe houses' where a POW on-the-lam could go for food and shelter.

Paper maps had some real drawbacks -- they make a lot of noise when you open and fold them, they wear out rapidly, and if they get wet, they turn into mush.

Someone in MI-5 (similar to America 's OSS ) got the idea of printing escape maps on silk. It's durable, can be scrunched-up into tiny wads, and unfolded as many times as needed, and makes no noise whatsoever.

At that time, there was only one manufacturer in Great Britain that had perfected the technology of printing on silk, and that was John Waddington, Ltd. When approached by the government, the firm was only too happy to do its bit for the war effort.

By pure coincidence, Waddington was also the U.K. Licensee for the popular American board game, Monopoly. As it happened, 'games and pastimes' was a category of item qualified for insertion into 'CARE packages', dispatched by the International Red Cross to prisoners of war.

Under the strictest of secrecy, in a securely guarded and inaccessible old workshop on the grounds of Waddington's, a group of sworn-to-secrecy employees began mass-producing escape maps, keyed to each region of Germany or Italy where Allied POW camps were regional system). When processed, these maps could be folded into such tiny dots that they would actually fit inside a Monopoly playing piece.

As long as they were at it, the clever workmen at Waddington's also managed to add:
1. A playing token, containing a small magnetic compass
2. A two-part metal file that could easily be screwed together
3. Useful amounts of genuine high-denomination German, Italian, and French currency, hidden within the piles of Monopoly money!

British and American air crews were advised, before taking off on their first mission, how to identify a 'rigged' Monopoly set -- by means of a tiny red dot, one cleverly rigged to look like an ordinary printing glitch, located in the corner of the Free Parking square.

Of the estimated 35,000 Allied POWS who successfully escaped, an estimated one-third were aided in their flight by the rigged Monopoly sets.. Everyone who did so was sworn to secrecy indefinitely, since the British Government might want to use this highly successful ruse in still another, future war.

The story wasn't declassified until 2007, when the surviving craftsmen from Waddington's, as well as the firm itself, were finally honored in a public ceremony.

I realize most of you are (probably) too young to have any personal connection to WWII (Dec. '41 to Aug. '45), but this is still interesting.

At this point the list of hastily conceived, politically motivated spit-and-plaster fixes that have been cobbled together by the government in an attempt to fix the economy - versus just getting the hell out of the way and letting the economy fix itself - could fill a book.
The only thing that matters to the administration and its allies is to corral a sufficient number of votes to get through the November elections on their collective(ist) feet.
Today, as I write, the news broke that Goldman Sachs has been charged with one of its many frauds. I should have seen this coming, as they had become - in the minds of Obama's core constituents - the poster child of Wall Street's greed. In addition, the firm has very, very deep pockets - just as Drexel Burnham Lambert did when the government laid them low with a $700 million fine... virtually none of which was then passed on to the purported victims of their indiscretions.
In the case of Goldman Sachs, I suspect that they may have become too clever by half - and that they've crossed some lines that will now be used by their erstwhile friends in Washington to string them up. And, in so doing, provide Team Obama with a win-win of appearing as a staunch opponent of Wall Street fat cats, while simultaneously confiscating another several billion to be cycled into the furnace of federal spending.
At this point, the only sane way to view the government is as an out-of-control gorilla that is wildly grabbing in all directions. As Goldman Sachs may be about to learn, once the gorilla has caught a hold of you, you've got real problems.
Unfortunately, the gorilla has grown so large that at this point it has its arms around the most of the economy. Counterproductive tax hikes are already baked in the cake and, if the administration has its way, it will soon try to layer on the mother of all tax increases in the form of a VAT. (I think at that point we might actually see riots in the streets.)
In Prechter's video, he echoes our constant admonitions to be careful and to be largely in cash just now. Words to the wise.
